SEVEN THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE OR WHILE IN A GROUP DISCUSSION

Group Discussion is a screening test where a group of students are required to discuss on a topic. Today, most of the colleges and B-schools conduct a round of Group Discussion to assess some basic skills in students. Generally, GD is the last process of selection after a written test and a personal interview. Therefore it is of upmost importance that we learn the tactics to come out as a gem in the process.

BODY LANGUAGE

Mark your body language from the beginning of the time you enter the GD room. Your body language is important. It may be noted, that often cameras are installed in the room to observe your code of conduct. You are given points on the way you sit, talk and conduct yourself. So be disciplined.

COMPREHENSIVE STUDY

No one wants to turn out a dumb in GD. Any topic can be put up in a discussion. Hence, it is significant that we prepare ourselves by doing a comprehensive study of all areas. Try to cover as many topics as you can. For practice, give mock GDs before the D- Day.

BE POLITE

We must stick to this point. Always pitch your points politely. GD is not a debate, its just a mere discussion between you and other participants. So stop  trying to be ARNUB GOSWAMI. However, you may raise your voice a bit when you have been constantly unable to enter the discussion.

SHOW YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS

You are being assessed for your leadership skills. GD is a way to analyze how well you work in a team. Ergo we must also give chance to others to speak, rather than speaking everything by yourself. Solve a quarrel by acting as a leader, in case it arises.

TRY TO COVER WIDE HORIZON

Don’t just keep on dragging on a same point. Repeating on a same point won’t give any advantage. Rather, try to come up with as many different and new points about the topic. This shows that you have a vast knowledge about the area.

AVOID BEING IN ONE ON ONE ARGUMENT

Avoid being trapped in one on one argument. You may not realize when a healthy discussion turns into a quarrel with someone. This poses a negative impact on the examiners. Hence, move out of a quarrel by politely asking, “ LETS LEAVE THIS ARGUMENT OVER HERE, AND RESUME TO OUR DISCUSSION”.

DON’T BE AT ALL QUIET

Inscribe this thing right into your mind. Staying quiet throughout the GD has never worked, neither will. It will surely lead to your non-selection. Thus, it is deeply advised to give your points in a discussion. Even if you are not aware of the field, it is  that you collect on the matter delivered by others and frame your own point out of it.
