Common Admission Test, usually known as CAT, is an entrance exam conducted by one of the old IIMs. This entrance exam is used for shortlisting candidates for admission to MBA or PGDM programs at prestigious institutes like all the IIMs, MDI, IITs, FMS Delhi, SPJIMR, and many other B-schools all over India. CAT is one of the most popular MBA entrance exams in India. CAT exam is taken by approximately two to three lakhs students every year. Candidates from various backgrounds like Engineering, Commerce, Arts, and Law appear for this exam every year. The CAT exam will be conducted across 156 cities all over India. It will be conducted in two slots- Morning and Afternoon Slot.
The CAT notification is already out. You all must be preparing really hard for CAT. One more important aspect of CAT is that you need to fill in the registration form correctly. This is because any discrepancy or wrong information can lead to serious consequences. And many times, students find it quite confusing to fill the application form amidst the full-on preparation phase. CAT Registration Process – Documents Required
Before you start your registration process for CAT, you need to have the following documents ready with you-
- Your passport size photograph- It should be in .jpg or .jpeg format with size less than 80kb.
- Your Signature- It should be in .jpg or .jpeg format with a size of less than 80 kb.
- NC-OBC/SC/ST certificate
- PwD/DA certificate
Documents mentioned in point 3 and 4 should be self-attested and should be in PDF format. The official CAT website contains the format of these certificates. You can visit the website and easily download them.
Information required for CAT registration process
You should know the following things before initiating your CAT registration process-
- Your email ID and phone number – Do note that all the communication will be carried out on this email ID and phone number.
- Marks obtained in 10th, 12th, graduation and post-graduation (if applicable)
- Work Experience details (if applicable)
- Scanned files of your photo and signature
- Scanned category certificate (if any)
- Payment Details (to pay the CAT registration fees)
How to register for CAT?
Following are the steps which you can follow to register for CAT-
- Visit the official CAT website and click on ‘Registration for new user’.
- A window showing the instructions will pop up. Read the instructions carefully.
- Then fill in your essential details like Name, phone number, email ID, and country to generate an OTP.
- Fill in the OTP and then click on ‘Validate OTP’.
- Submit the Captcha Code, and then click on Submit Application Form.
Once you have submitted your details, a text message will be sent to your registered mobile number. It will contain the password. And an email will be sent to your registered email ID. It will contain your User ID. You can then use this email ID and password to login to fill your CAT application form.

The CAT Application form is divided into the following six sections-
- Personal Details – You need to fill in your Father’s or Guardian’s Name, Nationality, Gender, category, communication and permanent address.
- Academic Details – You need to fill in your year of passing, marks obtained, maximum marks, percentage obtained, board/university name of your 10th, 12th, graduation or post graduation (if applicable).
- Work Experience Details- You need to fill in the name of the organization(s), your designation, industry type, and duration of the jobs which you have been a part of.
- Program Preference- You need to be select the programs in different IIMs in which you wish to apply.
- Preferred exam cities- You need to choose four preferred exam cities (in order of your preference. Preference 1 being your first preference).
- Final Payment – Make the final payment once you have completely filled your form and then submit it. Before submitting the form, make sure that you have filled in all the information correctly.

CAT exam rules and regulations
On the main day of the exam, you need to keep in mind the following rules and regulations-
- You are required to carry at least one ID proof and other necessary certificates or documents (if any).
- You need to get your ID verification done at the exam centre. They in-charge at the exam centre will also take your finger prints and photograph.
- Do carry your admit card to the exam centre.
- Make sure that you are not wearing or carrying any metallic object. Metallic pins, earrings, jewellery, bracelets, belts or anything is not allowed inside the exam hall.
- You will be provided with a writing pad and a pen. You need to submit this to the invigilator while leaving the examination hall.
- Report the exam centre well in time.
- No footwear is allowed inside the exam hall.
